A tiny annoyance |
As a professional mechanical engineer with 15 years of experience in mass production process and quality testing I thought I share some user observations on the product after using the new Log Box Pro for over a week. The physical installation is fairly easy and the setup does not require degree in electronics. The support from the site is nothing short of outstanding and I am sure I am one of many users who are very greatfull to have such an excellent product available. However I can not help it and have a few "mechanical" gripes with the boxes's hardware. The overal quality seems to be fine but:
1) The little sliding switch is in my opinion a real pain in the proverbial. I understand if it was something used only occasionally or for some sort of default setting, but for something that one need to twiddle with fairly often it is a poor choice. The old ECU Editor box had an old fashion toggle switch which was easy to use and robust unlike the current one that seem to need a specially manicured fingernail to use it. Not much of an option for people in a garage. Judging by the price of the set, it was not a cost driven choice. BTW there are three position toggle switches or even better - do we really need that damn swith at all and could not have a selector in a program?
2) The RJ 45 connectors. While electronic device, this is not a gizmo sitting on the desk inside and never gets moved. It is mounted on bike that despite the best of precautions and intentions gets dust, vibrations and occasional major thump. These type of connectors were never intended for such application and will be a problem. There are virtually dozens of multi-pin connectors that are more secure, better protected and therefore more reliable and should really be used there.
I hope the designers will give it a bit of a consideration for the next generation of the box to make it even greater than it is now.
Cheers. |
